It is the end of the school year which means that we will soon have to say goodbye to a few of our favorite teachers. This year, 7 middle school teachers are leaving and over the next 7 school days, The Direct Message will post an ‘Exit Interview’ that we conducted with each of these educators.

Mr. Joshua Babcock
Years at AES: 4 years, 2014 to 2018
Next Stop: Australia
Courses Taught: 7 and 8th grade Math
What will you miss most about AES? The people, the amazing colleagues (teachers, TA’s, non-teaching staff, everyone) and the awesome students and families that we have here. I will also miss the professional push that AES is known for and the strive to be better (growth mindset).
What is the best part about being a teacher at AES? Students, colleagues, and the idea that everyone is student centered and everyone wants to get better at teaching.
What are your plans for next year and what are your thoughts about this next step? I am moving to Australia with no job, following my heart. I will eventually find a teaching job
How do you hope your students and colleagues will remember you? Goofy, caring, childish, and happy.
What message would you like to leave for the community at AES? Question everything! Challenge yourself, don’t wait for others to challenge you, and make sure to have fun with what you are doing regardless of what it is find a lesson that can be learned and or the smallest piece of fun to celebrate.

What will you remember about this teacher?
Mr. Babcock was always a fun teacher. He entered his classroom everyday with a joke and a smile on his face. He treated us like his friends, not students, and through his way of teaching, I really learned a lot, and had a lot of fun.
What is a funny or memorable story that you have about this teacher (class, WOW, coaching, after school activities, etc.)
Mr Babcock was also my ASIAC soccer coach. When I got nervous before the first game of the tournament he cheered me up by telling me to play like he knew I could. I’m proud to say that ASIAC was a lot of fun and it wouldn’t have been as fun if he wasn’t our coach.
What makes this teacher unique?
Mr Babcock was not afraid to joke around. Class was always fun, even during assessments. He loved to make us smile or laugh and it was really cool that he was my teacher.

I will remember how funny, silly, nice, smart Mr.Babock was.
What is a funny or memorable story that you have about this teacher? (class, WOW, coaching, after school activities, etc.)
Some funny memorable stories I had of Mr.Babock is one time he was teaching, and then he made a funny face to the class. So then I starting taking pictures of him. It was so funny I laugh so much, and in the end I show him the pictures and we laugh together.
What makes this teacher unique?
For every math teacher I ever had, by far Mr.Babock has the best teaching style you could ever ask. He is always funny and he always makes jokes with us, but you still learn lots of things. So you can still have fun but still learn.
