“When I was in middle school, I started a kind of school newspaper, something we called the Panther Pen, and it was similar in some ways to the Direct Message…. I convinced my teacher to let me skip test prep, and she let completely run this submission magazine… I was like the editor… I chose the writing or artwork or poetry to publish. We weren’t using computers, so I had to use copy machines to hack it together, which made it not nearly as easy or polished as some of the work we’re doing now.”
