Did you know that Netflix has around 260 million viewers, making it the most popular streaming service worldwide? However, many people at AES don't think it is all that great. According to my personal research, about 4 in 10 people have negative feelings toward Netflix, while the rest love it. But why is that? Even if the number of people hating on Netflix may be small, why does that number exist? Well, I know why it shouldn’t exist, and read on to know why. But first, a little bit about Netflix.
From Mailing to Streaming
Netflix was founded in 1997 by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings in California after Hastings was charged for a late return of a DVD. They created a subscription-based DVD rental service that didn't fine for late returns, aiming to change how people rented movies. Customers could request a movie, and Netflix would mail the DVD. Only three DVDs could be rented at a time, and when one was returned, the next would be sent. In 2007, they added streaming, allowing subscribers to watch movies and TV shows instantly on their computers. This changed how people enjoyed entertainment and led the way for many other streaming services.
Netflix is Best
Firstly, Netflix is the best because it is the most affordable streaming service. Its basic plan, starting at just $8.99 or ₹199 per month, works perfectly for millions of people. This affordability makes it accessible to a wide range of viewers, no matter what their financial situation, which is rather important in today’s society.
Netflix is also the best because it has a lot of diversity in languages and movies. Its large variety includes content from many countries and cultures. There are 60 + languages available for foreigners, which is statistically more than any other streaming service. Whether you're interested in Korean dramas, Bollywood films, or European thrillers, Netflix has something for everyone, as it includes movies from over 190 countries. Therefore, it is one of the most diverse streaming services out there.
Furthermore, it is also the best because some of their shows have won awards. Take Nimona, for example. It’s one of the best animated movies of 2023 and was sure to become a major hit from the start. While it didn’t win any awards, it sure did deserve some and was nominated for many. Nimona is not the only amazing movie by Netflix. Netflix’s films have won 22 awards in total. This not only shows the quality of their films but also builds up Netflix's reputation. Even though movies from other apps may also have won awards, I consider Netflix to deserve them the most.
Lastly, Netflix is the best because it has a lot of content to watch. Currently, they have around 17,000 movies, TV shows, documentaries, and original productions available on Netflix. Although Netflix does not have the most content, that doesn’t mean anything since it isn’t that far behind. Netflix still ensures that there's always something new and exciting to discover.
However, some people argue that Netflix’s content may not have the best quality. And Netflix indeed used to value quantity over quality but now they’ve changed their approach. The article, Quality Over Quantity: Netflix Reveals New Content Strategy, states that Netflix has recently revealed that they are shifting their content strategy to prioritize quality over quantity. As the article says, “Right now, we’re not trying to hit a set number of film releases. It’s about ‘Let’s make what we believe in,’” Scott Stuber, head of Netflix's film division, stated. “And let’s actually put forth a slate that we can stand behind and say, ‘This is the best version of a romantic comedy. This is the best version of a thriller. This is the best version of a drama.’” This proves that Netflix is trying to improve, so any reason to dislike Netflix will soon be gone.
Before I learned any of this information, I used to prefer other streaming services over Netflix. It wasn’t that I disliked it; I just didn’t know this stuff and thought other platforms were better and more than they actually were. So, in all, the main reasons why I believe Netflix is the best are its affordability, the diverse content, its award-winning shows and movies, and its large range of content, as well as the fact that they are trying hard to improve.
